Some basic thoughts on AI

There is now more than 2 years since chatgpt was realesed and generative AI took the world with a storm. AI is nothing new as many people might think but the speed of development and the quality of the models has been mindblowing and the avaibility has been growing exponentially.
During this time I've been working with AI and have been trying to understand how it can be used to solve business challenges. I've been working with large language models, image models, audio models and have been trying to understand how they can be used to solve business challenges. I have also been testing out small language models running on my own hardware.
What I've learned is that AI is not a silver bullet and that it's not always the best solution. It's important to understand the problem you are trying to solve and then decide if AI is the best solution. I have identified two main rules that I feel everyone should follow when working with AI.
The rules
- Don't use AI for an area where you are not knowledgeable in.
- Don't use AI when you are late on a delivery to make sure you can deliver on time.
Thoose are ofcourse not the only rules but they create a good foundation for working with AI. You should of course always be considering data security and data privacy when working with AI.
The first rule doesn't mean that you need to be an expert in the area you use AI in. It means that you need to have knowledge in the area you will use AI in. If you are not knowledgeable in the area you will use AI in, you will not be able to understand the results and you will not be able to make the right decisions.
The second rule doesn't mean that you should never use AI. It means that you should always have time to review the results and make sure that the results are correct. If you are late on a delivery, you should not use AI to make sure you can deliver on time. The result might be that you deliver something that is not correct or that you deliver something that is not what the customer wants.
I hope you find these rules helpful and that you will use them to make the best decisions when working with AI.
